Listing your website with various directories is a quick and easy way to gain valuable inbound links. With some you have to pay to get listed, but most offer a free option.
Info Vilesilencer has a list of search engine friendly directories. Click on the link at the top of the page and you can download the list as an excel spreadsheet. The first worksheet is a list of general directories and includes the page rank of each one. There are also worksheets for industry specific directories, which is very helpful indeed. Listing in industry specific directories helps improve the relevancy of the inbound link. This is very important in search engine rankings.
Add URL.nu has a list of over 900 search engine friendly directories. They are all free and none of them require a reciprocal link (ie, you do not need to link back to the directory).
Adding your site to these directories can be time consuming, but can be rewarding in terms of gaining inbound links. These links alone may be enough to propel your site up the rankings, especially for keywords that are not very competitive. I recommend setting aside at least a bit of time each week to go through and submit your sites with directories in a systematic way.
