Build your own database driven website using PHP and MySQL
By Kevin Yank, Sitepoint
"Build your own database driven website using PHP and MySQL" is aimed at those beginning PHP programming. Its author, Kevin Yank, is an experienced programmer, author and editor at Sitepoint. Kevin guides you through the stages of developing a database driven website. In order words, you will build a simple content management system.
The book does start at the beginning and explain basic PHP and MySQL syntax. It effectively uses the building of the database driven website as the example to illustrate the basic concepts.
The book also covers some advanced topics including image manipulation, MySQL administration, cookies, sessions and structured PHP programming.
The book moves swiftly through the topics with minimal fuss or waffle. All the code is included in the body of the text and you can download the code from the Sitepoint website. It is very easy to use this book as a reference and much of the content can be reused or reworked for other projects.
The downside is that the books greatest asset is also its greatest weakness for the absolute beginner. The speed at which Kevin moves can leave you feeling bewildered and confused, especially if you have never done any programming before. A good approach to over come this is to use some of the in depth online tutorials available at sites like Zend.com or Tigg.com to cement your understanding of the basic concepts and then use this book to develop your first database driven website the right way.
I have found "Build your own database driven website using PHP and MySQL" to be one of the best PHP books that I have read. I constantly refer to it rather than the meatier PHP books and highly recommend it.
